Term Loops

The Term Loop Builder repeats a Global Block once per taxonomy term, such as a category or tag.

Choosing the Terms

In the Content tab, open Query:

The Term Loop Query section with Taxonomy set to Categories
The Term Loop Query section with Taxonomy set to Categories
  • Taxonomy — Choose the taxonomy to list terms from.
  • Limit — Set the maximum number of terms to return.
  • Hide Empty — Skip terms with no posts assigned.

By default, terms are ordered by name, ascending.

Load Terms by Query

Enable Load Terms By Query to configure filtering and ordering with PHP in the Term Query editor. Return an array of WP_Term_Query arguments:

PHP
return [
    'taxonomy'   => 'category',
    'orderby'    => 'count',
    'order'      => 'DESC',
    'hide_empty' => true,
    'number'     => 6,
];

Use these arguments to set ordering, term meta queries, parent/child filters, and inclusion or exclusion lists. Keep the results as term objects so the repeated block can access each term's data.

Binding to Term Data

Choose a Global Block under Repeated Block to design each term. Inside it, use Term Name, Term Description, Term Permalink, Term Count, Term ID, or Term Custom Field to display the current term's data. See Fields Reference.

Pagination

Use Pagination to divide the term list into pages. Limit sets the page size; with pagination enabled and no Limit set, Breakdance uses 10 terms per page.

Layout and Empty Results

Use the Design tab to style the loop. See the Term Loop Builder layout and design controls. Set When Empty in the Advanced popout under Repeated Block to display an empty state.

Troubleshooting

The Taxonomy Dropdown Includes Unexpected Entries

The dropdown lists every registered taxonomy, including WordPress internals such as Navigation Menus, Link Categories, and Pattern Categories. Choose the taxonomy containing the terms you want to display.

My Custom Query Returns Only Six Terms

The starter query includes 'number' => 6. Change or remove number in the Term Query editor to adjust that limit.

A Reused Global Block Causes a Critical Error

Check whether the block uses post fields such as Post Title or Post Excerpt. These can cause a critical error when evaluated against a term. Duplicate the block and replace its post-field connections with term fields before using it in the Term Loop.
